In absentia. A Phenomenological Simulation of the Absent Character

Abstract

The current enterprise would sooner attempt and come up with a speculative text rather than a critical one. Having as a starting point several cases of the absent character (such as Colombo’s wife, Socrates’s wife, Godot, the tartars of lieutenant Drogo, the imaginary friends of children, and others) the interest rests mainly on the direct effects on the ontology of the fictional world created by the absence itself of any character talked, told about, and turned into a myth. Thus, the absent character is invested with an eidetic nature within the diegetic universe.
